Notes
Carl Gross and Barbara Heilman were married on March 5, 1919. This was an arranged marriage. This was customary at the
time. They made their home on the Ignatz Gross (Carl's father) homestead until 1929. The homestead was five miles west
of Hague, later known as the Joe Welk farm. The first six children were born on this homestead. In 1929, they moved to
the Engelhart farm west of Strasburg, located in the Krassna area. They farmed there until 1933, when they moved to
the Schumacher farm, also in the Krassna area. In 1936, they could no longer afford to pay the $200 and fourth bushel
of yearly rent. This was during the depression years, along with drought and no crops to harvest. In 1936, they moved
to the Brown farm and stayed there until 1941. In 1941, they purchased their first farm in the Hull area. This farm
was located approximately three miles from the Ignatz Gross homestead. This farm was purchased from Albert Hasper.
They lived on this farm until the late 1960s, when they sold it to Peter Nieuwsma, their neighbor. Prior to selling
the farm, they had retired and were living in Hague. They purchased the Ignatz Gross (Carl's father) house in the
early 1950s that had been sitting vacant for some years. They lived in this house until Carl's death in 1981. In 1981,
it was purchased by Albert Baumgartner.
